Poppy Palin

“And when you call me I’m the greenest leaf that ever drank the light,
And when you call me I’m the tallest tree that touched the sky,
And I’m the river that has burst its banks and fled,
And I’m the lark ascending, way out of sight, I’m singing in flight…
Again.”

From the poem Again by Poppy Palin

Poppy Palin is the author of nine books including Craft of the Wild Witch (Llewellyn, 2004), Green Spirituality (Written as Rosa Romani and published by Green Magic in 2004) and The Greening (Wild Spirit, 2005). She is currently completing Spiritwalking, hopefully for publication in 2007. She is also an illustrator, notably for hedgewitch Rae Beth, and a sacred tattoo artist specialising in one-off designs and has even found the time to design a set of Tarot cards. A qualified, experienced teacher and singer/musician, she lives in Somerset in the United Kingdom.

Poppy defines herself as a wild witch and doesn’t see herself as religious or Wiccan. In an interview given to the Australian Silver Wheel magazine in 1995 she explains:

“I have simple, green-spirited, free-flowing faith in the sanctity of all life and in the mystery of existence. I strongly agree with the statement that 'beliefs divide us', (as expounded by Tim Freke, author of 'Jesus and Goddess') and don't want to force yet more limiting structures on people which create 'us' and 'them', ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ standpoints. Wicca is now a religion and I am non-religious by definition as the word religion derives from the Latin words ligo (to bind, tie), ‘religio’ (moral obligation, duty) and religiosus (god-fearing). Surely to be bound to one way of seeing, in a condition of fear, is undesirable for a free-thinking spiritual seeker? Also I have never really understood the need for a human-shaped, human-referenced religious deity in a Universe that is surely multi-dimensional and unfathomably vast; it is this limiting human-centricity that I desire so passionately to get away from!”

Her work has been praised far and wide.

Rae Beth wrote:

“Poppy Palin is adept at parting the veils between the everyday world and the realms of the wild spirit. Her approach is unpretentious, friendly and down to earth. It is also poetic. She is a clear medium for teachings of a wise wild beauty, much like a bird call in silver light after rain, luring us deeper into the forest. Her work I a pilgrimage that can teach how to live magically, heart and soul.”

Poppy gave an interview for the September 2006 edition of Magicka School’s e-zine The Magickal Light and contributed much artwork including an image for the front cover. Typical of her generosity, she posted prints to the school and even gave Pino a copy of her fictional work The Greening, Rise of the Faerytide.
