I was just wondering if there is anyone here who has homeschooled their children or those who have considered it but decided to go with the public school system. What are your thoughts? Which do you think is better? OR is one even better than the other?

My oldest Grandson wanted me to home school him, but I dident think I could do it with the way I work, anyway he got into a program called Play-dough, (I dont know if I spelled that right) you can down load it on line, so he can work on his (H.S.) lessons here and at the alternative school. I think you would have to see someone in an alternative school to get it going and im not sure if its used for grade school, but it wouldn't hurt to check.
The good thing is he can work on it as fast as he wants and if he gets all his credits he gets his H.S. diploma. And I was told he could get it done in a year.
But im sure you could do it a lot of people home school.

I saw a program on TV that supplies you with everything you need and its for K-12, so I considered it. My only concern is that he will miss out on social skills.

Thats a biggie, children learn how to interact and use their coping skills when in a public school environment. May you could revisit the idea if you REALLY dont like the school he gets into. Or wait until he is older.

adding my two cents...I think home school is good for special situations, but a public school in normal ones is the best, because of social skills, competitivity, and the fact that for higher levels of education it provides a better "foundation". and of course, it can be supplemented by extra work home..

TQ you raise an excellent point about supplementing at home. Which I'm already prepared to do with the terrible education cuts that have been made in my state. I am incredibly worried about him getting a decent education, but kids learn from other kids. Its such a tough one. I guess if I find myself teaching him more at home I'll have my answer.

Hey Lindsay! If you can find an independent study school near you, they're great. You and your child meet with a teacher once a week and they assign all of the work. I know for high schoolers, you can take traditional classes with a teacher and other students although I don't know if something like that is usually offered for younger kids. Another great option is private school - although it's tricky what with religious differences and all, sometimes a small, private school is the best education in the world. I spent several years before high school in a two-room Christian school and here I am in college, still working there. It's very one-on-one and the kids are together with both older and younger so the social skills development just doesn't get any better. It can be difficult to find a private school that's not Christian, though, of course.

I have homeschooled my 2 oldest boys for the last 2 years, but I am not very good at it. I think the program you are talking about is called K12 and its online public school. I signed my kids up for it. They give the kids a test at the begining of the year so they know how much the kids know. Then they form the ciriculum to fit the child according to what they know and need to work on. Also they are supposed to have field trips and such so the kids can socialize some. They send you everything you need and you send back it back at the end of the year shipping is on them. If you need a computer they even send one. That's all I can remeber about it at the moment.

i considered home schooling when my daughter was little, but after I weighed my level of ability in many of the subjects offered in school today i went with public school. She was even offered the oppertunity to take college courses while in h s. I was a history major, my daughter is a english/writing major. In jr. high she was evaluated and we were told she was already writing at a collage level so i was glad in our case we went with public school.
I wish you well in your endevor. The internet school sounds like a viable option.

Hi this is probably a little late but whatever. Oh and im not a parent im still in school but sometimes the viewpoint of a kid is helpful. Im in ninth grade and ive been both homeschooled and enrolled in public school For each person its different, Im very solitary and like to work alone and learn at different speeds so homeschooling was perfect for me. I was also bullied so it made things easier But my brother is very social and cant go like an hour without talking to someone so homeschooling almost killed him! (well actually i almost killed him because he wouldnt leave me alone ) It all depends on the kid and there personality as to how they will take it. *If you do homeschool NEVER use a program called Alpha Omega it teaches absolutly nothing, we were given packets of addition and substraction worksheets in 7th grade! My brother (who is a year ahead of me) was doing the same packets i was!*
