A windowsill Greenhouse is basically something that you can fit on a windowsill that will provide an environment for seeds to germinate and grow until such a time when you can pot them up or plant them out. You can purchase them, but for sure we've got 'something' kicking around that would provide the same thing for way less. Another benefit is that we're re-using! Totally 'green' and lovely. lol
What we'll use:
- Anything you've got that will allow sunlight through the sides, enough room on the sides for you to fit your hand in, and tall enough to allow for at least 3 inches of growth + the height of your growing medium. For example: a 2 liter soda bottle, an old snap-top container, a cake container from your bakery, one of those nifty potato salad containers from the deli, etc..
- Your substrate. I adore Jiffy Peat Pellets for this, but you could use an old yogurt container with holes in the bottom filled with seed starting mix or even make a little pot out of newspaper and fill it with the same.
- Something to hold our substrate up out of the water. We don't want our substrate soggy, just moist. A coffee can lid, or even some gravel in the bottom of the receptacle should do the trick.
- Seeds. lol Mid-March should be my area's last frost date so all of what I start now can be hardened off right around that time without putting too much stress on a fully grown plant. The idea for me here is to have some of those lovely young plants we get at the nursery around that time of year right from my own home rather than spending that extra money on a nursery grown plant. It's less expensive and more fulfilling (for me) to watch a bitty seed mature.
That's pretty much it for the supplies list. w00t! lol What we need to do is provide a small space for our chosen seeds that will give our seeds the optimal setting to germinate. - We need light; hence the clear to opaque sides.
- We need to preserve the moisture of the substrate and a closed container will hold in the humidity and prevent too much evaporation. We don't want our substrate soggy, just moist.
- We need warmth, but not too much heat or it will just bake our poor seeds. lol Again the closed container will provide this heat if in a sunny window. My choice is a north facing window as the southern facing windows may provide too much heat.
- Once the seed germinates we need a way to make sure the air is circulating to prevent diseases like dampening off, etc.. A removable lid helps with this while still providing the things we already covered.
- We need to be able to remove the seedling once it has it's first set of true leaves (or a root system that needs larger accommodations) without tipping the greenhouse and risking breakage of our wee plant.
So, now that we know what we need and why, lets get started!
What I've got is a bakery bought plastic cake container. It has a black bottom and a nice tall clear plastic lid. The bottom has grooves that are about 1/4 of an inch deep, so pretty perfect really. lol But still I added an old coffee lid to be sure I had what I needed there to keep the soil from getting too soggy.
I wanted to avoid having to pot up too soon, so I used an old yogurt container; carefully reamed a few holes in the bottom with the tip of a knife and filled it with sterile soil. Seed starting mix wasn't on hand at the time, but for sure I've got the sterile soil. lol
I did this three days ago so I could take a pic to show y'all. LOL The Basil seeds are already germinating!
See that li'l green guy in that last pic? That's one of my basil babies. Once his feeder leaves develop (the first set of leaves that are meant to help feed the plant while it's root system develops) I'll take that yogurt cup out of my green house and put a small plastic bottle (without the lid) with the bottom cut off snugly over the top of the plant so that it still maintains moisture but has air circulation too. When it's about 3 inches tall and has a few sets of leaves, I can take the bottle off completely and just have the yogurt cup in the window until it's time to harden off (or pot up).
Take a look around and see what you've got that you can use as your greenhouse. If you have any questions, please post up! For sure there are oodles of things we could use, but not all of them are going to grant us easy access to the plant; but I'm willing to bet we can put our heads together and come up with a way to make just about any container work!

My absolute pleasure, Star Moonstorm! Thank you for participating!
I know what you mean about the Nurseries and garden centers ... Thankfully I have seeds here that I'll be wanting in the garden this year.
w00t! Can't wait to see what you dig out of the shed!

I've been saving the seeds from my sweet lemons. Sweet lemons btw are pretty rare around here. They are lemons that are NOT sour at all, sweet tasting and very high in vitamin C. We have a tree that is loaded with them and I want to have one wherever I may go from now on...
So for my project I want to germinate those seeds. I wonder how long they might take to germinate.

You might want to cold stratify the seeds for a few weeks first, Katherined. I found this site looking around. It says to cold stratify for about 3 weeks, then pot on. The seed should germinate in 4 - 6 weeks or longer.
I've only grown a wee oak from seed before as far as trees go. lol (it was given to someone who had room and desire for an oak! ) Oh wait, that's not true, lol my avocado tree is from an avocado pit.
I'm going to have to look into these sweet lemons! They sound divine.

I thought I'd update y'all on how my Basil is going.
They're about 1/2 inch tall now.
These first two sets of leaves are the 'feeder leaves'. They basically provide the plant with most of what it needs while it is developing a nice strong root system.
Around the time these feeder leaves pop out, I take the plant out of the greenhouse so that diseases and mold wont take the seedlings. Until two days ago I had a small plastic bottle with the bottom cut out and the lid removed nestled around the seedlings to provide the warmth, but still keep a bit of air flow around them. I misted the pot (yogurt cup) every day by removing the plastic bottle and misting the substrate to retain a moist but not soggy substrate.
If I'd started them in something smaller (like a peat pellet or an egg shell) I would have to wait until the second or third set of 'true' leaves to pot this plant up (put it in a bigger pot). The roots are too delicate at the stage of only having it's feeder leaves to really do any potting up.
So basically:
- Once you see the developed feeder leaves on your plant, remove it from your greenhouse to avoid diseases.
- Mist the container's soil to retain a moist but not soggy substrate.
- Pot up your young plant only after the first two or three sets of true leaves develop.
When I decide it's time to plant this Basil outside I'm going to have to do what they call "Hardening off". Basically this is just preparing the plant for it's new environment (outdoors).
I'll set it outdoors in the shade for a few hours the first day, a little more sun and time outside the next day; and so on until it shows no stress being in an outdoor environment. Then I'll either pot it up to a pot where it will remain for it's life cycle, or find a good spot to transplant it to in the garden.

Basil is so gratifying to grow since it sprouts so easily. Thanks for that site on growing lemons. I've got all the seeds in the fridge now and will wait to germinate them. I have also bought some peat pots 16 of them for 99 cents at the 99 cents store! I will germinate them in those then they can go to the next pot or the ground straight from there.

I'm going to check out the dollar store here and see if it's got as awesome a deal!!
I'm really anxious to see how well your sweet lemons do. Very tempted to try out a lemon seed from a puckery lemon. My daughter wants a lemon tree very badly. lol
Yep, basil is definitely not a finicky seed, or plant! It has grown well each year and of course we have to amend our soil each year too. It's finally at a point where it's not clumping together (clay ... blech) but Basil has done very well right in the bed in the full Texas sun through each of our amendments. lol It's ease and speed in germinating was the biggest reason I chose this herb; was hoping I'd done it in time to have something to show y'all and w00t! Basil pulls through again!
I've got a clipping from Lemon Verbena in the cake plate greenhouse right now. I've never propagated this plant before, so here's to hoping I did well. lol
Tonight I'm going to see if my daughter wants to help with the rest of the perennial seeds I've got on hand right now. Oodles of peat pellets and a stock pile of yogurt cups (and she's got a stock pile of popsicle sticks to use for labeling!), it will be awesome I think for the both of us to see how well we do. lol I've got a clear bottomed storage box that isn't being used as storage, so it may as well hold my seeds for a few weeks!

Well, y'all I had fun with this one, and my daughter will be having a touch of fun here a bit later too. She's going to start a few of her own seeds for her own little garden bed here. I've been debating on where we could put her bed, and it looks like she and I are just going to have to go outside and take a look. lol
So far I've got two sage seedlings and a Lavender seedling that the cat couldn't resist so I'll have to start those outdoors. I've also got Yarrow, ecinacea purpurea, oregano, thyme, Tarragon and spearmint seedlings started in the windowsill greenhouse and Lemon verbena and Rosemary cuttings that have rooted in there as well.
I've had a lot of fun with this project and I'm glad y'all played with me! If you have any pictures you'd like to share, please do! I'd love to see them!
Tomorrow, I'll have March's project up. I've made some seed balls that I thought y'all might enjoy. They're fun to make, and could be given as a gift for the Equinox we'll be celebrating in a few weeks.

Well today I'm finally going to be able to plant my sweet lemon seeds, since they've been in the refrigerator for three weeks today! I'm looking forward to whatever your next project is going to be.

OOOH!! I'd so give it my very best shot, Katherined.
I'm in zone 8b and quite a few citrus trees do quite well in this area. If you think 8b would do the tree well, I'd be more than honored to give it a go along with you!
I am so very honored and excited that you would offer me such a wonderful experience. I am just, over the moon, Katherined. Thank you so very much.
