I've just read "Wicca a guide for the solitary practitioner." I've just read this book all was ok until I read what he had to say about runes. He managed to write more uninformed drivel than even Ralph Blum managed. The point is, I can't assume he has knowledge of any other aspect of Wicca, based on the appalling ignorance he displays about the runes.

Greetings Alfvin, I have that book, what in particular do you disagree with. I'm not a runemaster, but I have an interest in them. I don't want to make any mistakes.

Don't know about the runes info but, in my opinion, the rest of the book is only a very basic look at Wicca for people who are just starting out.

There are too many to list. He assigns wrong meanings to runes, uses symbols that I'm sure he's made up, passes off Pensylvania Dutch Hex signs as runes, even has on one its side. The symbol he uses as a woman for example is completely made up. There is no such thing, same as the three squares inside each other. He has only drawn 12 runes, there are either 16, 24 or between 29 - 33 depending which system you are using. The German Armanenschaft have their own 18 rune system. Only four of his runes are a proper shapebut don't have the correct meaning.

Thanks Alfvin, I will make a note of that in my book and I will be sure to go to an official Rune site for any further studies. Thanks for the heads up!
Edited for spelling

Thank you for your post Alfvin, it is very timely. I have this book, amongst others and will be embarking on learning the Runes this year.
Forewarned is forearmed and all that...
Much appreciated. Joanne

As we already talked on Facebook, Scott Cunningham is a seriuos Wicca author. He is included in Magickas' courses, and, in my opinion, a must read for beginners. He does have extensive knowlwdge about Wicca....

The section on runes that you're referring to might be a section the publishers pulled out of his other book about a coven and tradition that he created. He has a complete list in the other book (the name of which escapes me right now) of runes that he either created or culled from other sources. It is his own personal list and not one completely relating to Wicca, so it's a bit of a hodgepodge. I agree that he is a must read for beginners, but not much beyond that point as it gets to be repetitive. He was a part of many covens, learned from many traditions, and as such has extensive knowledge and I trust his writings. It's a mistake on the publisher's part for not clarifying that they edited many of his books after his death to include things from his personal book of shadows. That being said, I haven't read the book you have, but I think I recognize the list of runes you're describing. Just pointing out, it's probably not his fault this wasn't clarified.

Thank you for that clarification. There were a couple of other books of his I was put off trying, but I may well get later. As far as Wicca goes I'm not sure about it yet.

It's not for everyone (it didn't take me too long to figure out it wasn't for me, no matter how much I respect certain Wiccan writers), but that's the glory of life- there are many paths to follow or pave yourself! It's best to go through a ton of books and different authors to find out who rings truest for you.

Thank you for this thread Alfvin, the runes part of that book always confused the underworld out of me. And thanks for clearing things up Bell.

I've looked at some reviews on Amazon of hisother books I'd been interested in, I'm not going to bother now. As for wicca, I think I'll do my own thing. Asatru with a Wiccan/Druidic flavour.
