I can't find the link, but apparently there was a protest in arizona outside a town hall meeting that Obama whas having. People were bringing unconcealed weapons because it is legal. But, one man actally brought an assult rifle! I think that was a little much and I would think jepordize the safty of our president, but there wasn't much that could be done.
What does everyone think about this?

A civilian does not need an assault rifle That guy's ridiculous.
(I would prefer to use harsher words to more accurately describe the situation, but my being a mod doesn't allow it, lol)

While I don't disagree with the protest, I do disagree with the presence of the gun. President or not, a gun has no place at a protest. Too much room for error...

More people acting irresponsibly with guns - how surprising.

The concept of toting a gun around with you is alien to me. Just don't understand it at all.
Does that mean people literally walk around the streets carrying guns? What about going shopping, is it legal there?
As for being able to bring a lethal weapon to a rally attended by the so-called "leader of the free world" (a term I find quite offensive to the rest of the free world). Well thats just ummm, unwise.

miri, you have to have a license to carry a concealed weapon, that much I know.
I'm originally from a rural area in Western Kentucky, and I can't think of anyone that I know personally who doesn't own a gun.
Hunting is huge in that area, and all the hunters have gun racks in the back window of their trucks/SUVs with guns on them.
I have never seen anyone walking around a public place with a gun out in the open, though.

Miri- as Morgane said, its not common to go into a store and see someone walking around with a gun. The reason why these people brought guns to the protest is purely a political statement. Here in the US the two major political parties are Republicans and Democrats. Republicans are (or think they are) real patriotic and for some reason, are completly crazy about their right to bear arms. Obama is a democrat, so naturally when you have a protest you'll have your "radicals" (which is kind of a contridiction because the republicans are supposed to be the conservetive party) So these republican "radicals" brought there guns as a form of a protest against the president, a democrat. And since it is their constitutional right there wasn't anything that could be done without violating their constitutional right.
It makes no sence to me either....Just because the president is a democrat doesn' mean he's gonna take away their guns, and the real reason behind the protest was government controled health care which has nothing to do with their guns...like I said, they're a little crazy. But I guess you'll find your crazy democrats too. But as a democrat that has been doing a lot of protesting in the past eight years, I've never been to a protest where someone brought a deadly weapon....
I hope I haven't offended any republicans....if I did, I'm sorry.

The NRA (National Rifle Association) is HUGELY paranoid that someone is going to take away our guns - so they get 'up in arms' () at the drop of a hat lmao
I believe in being able to own a gun for hunting, but I don't see why assault rifles and things like that are allowed. I mean come on.

You'll understand it when a rapist or mugger attacks you during a nightly run to the store. Or when you're cornered by a gang that would easily kill you for your shoes.
There's a reason criminals LIKE the gun bans. Easier prey for them.
Now I personally prefer to carry around a knife, but I've found that using them to their greatest defensive potential is trickier than simply aiming a gun and pulling a trigger.

Well I didn't mean to make you angry!
I was just asking a question because I live in a country that does not have a gun culture and wanted to understand the whole Gun thing. In Australia farmers, hunters (limited) and competitive shooters can get licenses but carrying a gun around here will end you up in gaol, or shot by police.
Yes our criminals do have guns. I know, because I recently lost a dear friend, an innocent victim of a gun battle. Doesn't mean I understand it.

miri, I've done alot of 'explaining' here in Ontario, so I understand your curiousity fully! It's hard to comprehend for someone who wasn't brought up that way!
I used to carry a small handgun and a thing of mace at all times, just because I worked late hours and had to walk across a deserted hospital parking lot to get to my car in the dark. Another nurse was attacked and raped in the parking lot, so I felt I needed protection. I learned to shoot at an early age, and always had a handgun in my home.
When the world is going crazy all around you, it lends a certain sense of 'security' just to know that you can protect yourself if you're given no other choice.
If everyone used them for protection only, there wouldn't be such a problem with them.

Miri, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound like I was upset at what you said. I really wasn't, honest I was just trying to explain with examples...it sounded different in my head

Morgane, I am entirely understandable to the points you made in this quote. That being said, do you know that if a robber comes into your home and you find him/her leaving, with their back towards you and you shoot them in the back to stop them from leaving with your things, you can be prosecuted! All joking aside, the robber is able to take you to court and claim that you tried to kill him, commit murder because his/her back was turned to you.
In the good ol' U S of A. . .we are living in a criminal's world. The laws usually protect the majority of the innocent folk, but bring in outside factors such as guns, and everything changes. I recommend a really excellent movie: Felon. Let's you see inside the world of using guns as a means of a protection.
Why can't we all just get along
This is such a sensitive subject, it's quite hard not to rattle someone's cage.

oh such an interesting topic...America and its love for guns. It is a topic that anyone living outside the US has a v. hard time understanding. I now live here in the US for 10 years and still do not fully understand it. I personally do not carry a gun but that is largely due to the fact that years of martial arts have taught me better ways to take care of myself. Without that knowledge I probably would consider it. On a different level I do not understand how a country can let it get that far that police departments have inferior guns to criminals. I do not understand how one of the richest, most prosperous countries ever can let its society degenerate to a point where a lot of people feel that guns are the only way to feel safe. I do not understand the need for anyone to own a military assault rifle. I do not understand how society as a whole has allowed it to get to a point where the value of life is held in such low esteem. It is like the old saying: If you are not outraged you are not listening. Living in this country feels like the 60s civil rights movement has drained all will for politcal resistance and there is nothing left. If people thought Vietnam was not OK what are they thinking about the wars right now? I feel this society is too tired, too consumed with itself to do anything. We just again had another 6 year old killed by stray bullets and exactly nothing happened. No protests nothing.
OK end of rant
Love and peace to all
