This is something interesting (and helpful) that I tried over the weekend, and I thought I would share it here.
It's a wonderful way to get an overall summary of a reading once you complete it.
What you do is this...
Add all the numbers relating to the cards in the spread you just did. (The Fool is zero, Ace is 1, and no value is assigned to the court cards) The remaining cards of the Major and Minor Arcana are assigned the number relating to them.
Your goal is to achieve a number between 1 and 22, to correspond with one of the Major Arcana cards. If you receive a higher sum, simply calculate the sum of those digits until you take it down to a number between 1 and 22.
Then, take a look at the Major Arcana card that corresponds with this number - this card should give you a great overview of the spread you just read.
For me, it's kind of like a double check, to make sure I didn't miss anything.
I did a large gypsy spread yesterday and you know how daunting those big spreads can be. This was the first time I tried using the Quintessential card following the reading, and I found it to be amazingly accurate.
Just thought I would share!

Hmm..... thanks, Morgane. Never heard of this before but it sounds really interesting. I'm going to try it for sure.

I look at this card in depth, just to make sure I didn't overlook anything in the reading.
So far, it's always been a very accurate 'summary' of the reading as a whole - nothing more or nothing less.
My thoughts are that it's a good way to double check a reading, and certainly interesting how it works out!
And, it only takes a couple of minutes to do it, so that's a plus!

Would it be appropriate to do this after the fact?
I mean a reading that seems about right but was done a few days prior and still swimming in your head as having missed something?

Sorry, Asphodel, I didn't see this earlier!
Yes, it would be fine to do it at any time, as long as you wrote the reading down and could figure out which card it is! If the card seems to be a good overview of the full reading, you'll feel more comfortable with what you got from it!

It's all good.
I write down all my readings (maybe three or four for the year) except those that are just 'for the day' (which I don't do very often either). There's normally a pattern even if it's just small and hard to find. At the end of the year it makes a good way to find out what it is that I might want to change, or even a strength I might want to expand upon in the upcoming year. Meh, it's a theory I've enjoyed for a while anyway.
