A blow for religious freedom or a real danger to society?

This part in particular struck me..."The judge said he had reduced the sentence after hearing that Aziz had "wholeheartedly done a lot of good for a lot of people"."

I think if it is going to help people get well, that they should leave the guy alone. especially if it is a concenting adult that is taking it.

MM,

He shouldn't be distributing home remedies which have dangerous drugs in them -- if he's distributing an illicit and controlled substance, then he's breaking the law.

Of course I would never advocate breaking the law, however some of the remedies used in Shamanic practices have been used for thousands of years and have become illegal relatively recently (decades rather than millenia). It must be a real conflict of practicing Shamanism in modern times.

This chap obviously knows what he's doing as even the judge said he'd done a lot of good. As long as the people who use his services are fully aware of the potential consequences and agree to the risks, I personally have no problem with his practice.

Since my husband got sick, we've personally become deluged with sales pitches from all sorts of home remedy practitioners, holistic healers and even Shamans. It's hard to sort through who actually can help, who only might help and who is just out to rip people off. It's a big problem in the U.S. with sick people being targeted and taken advantage of.

My advice to anyone considering the use of non-traditional medicine is to speak to other patients. Practitioners who are 'transparent' and open about their successes and failures will usually have patients that are not only willing to talk, but want to talk to others about it.
