I was wondering if anyone had any advice for a problem I have been having lately. When I sit down to read anything (even for pleasure) I cannot focus for long. I lose track of what I am reading, am easily distracted etc. This is odd as reading used to be my favorite activity. A good book could be devoured in a day's time. This is obviously adversely effecting my Wiccan studies. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The only time I've ever had that problem was when I went though a depression. I dont know if that has any thing to do with your situation, but I thought I'd mention it, just in case.

I actually suffer from bipolar disorder. So I know all to well about depression. Fortunately I am properly medicated, so I do not believe that is the current situation. However thank you for the concern.

Being busy, tired or even trying to absorb too much at once can contribute to losing track or being easily distracted. Also medication can make it difficult to concentrate.

I do that if I have a lot on my mind. So I usually just put the book down an try later.

I haven't picked up a book to learn from in years but I could read a novel a day if I had the time. For me, I think I'm so used to flying through the novels that I do that with everything. When reading through lessons and such I have to force myself to write notes to focus more.
When I was younger I had to have music on when reading. I found since it gave me something to block out I focused better on the book.

Hmm my advice would be for you to read a book you have already read before and one you especially love. Or reading a new book from a genre you enjoy. A lot of spiritual books can get very technical and they can use a thousand long words just to say something that you could put into a small sentence.
If light fiction is ok for you to get through then it may be the spiritual books, if that is the case I would recommend going back to basics, or break the book down and read a paragraph or chapter at a time then maybe making some notes or just reflect on what you just read. That may make things easier to absorb and help you get back into the rhythm of things.
Reading is much different from watching TV. With TV the information is given quickly and hardly gives the viewer time to think or process the information at times. With reading you can set your own pace and it is usually much slower than that of TV. It requires more effort too I think. Maybe reduce your TV intake if it is a lot.
Try some form of relaxation before picking up a book, even a nice relaxing bath. If you have other things on your mind it can be harder to concentrate on a book.

As you mention bipolarity medication, you might also want to contact with your doctor, telling him/her about this. Some drugs can cause that lack of concentration in reading.

Some drugs can cause that lack of concentration in reading. i have discussed this isuue with my doctor and she has placed me on the appropriate medication. i can focus on other things, reading is just what i am still struggling with. also i have tried light fiction reading in the form of a new book from my favorite fiction series and still have had no luck on concentrating. i will however try relaxation prior to attempting to read. thank you all for the caring you show by taking the time to help me with this not so little problem.
