Wow. polished dirt balls. I cannot believe they are so beautiful. I may just have to try making one.

Ahh gotcha now Elia when you had a pic of the dirt ball ~ this is really a neat project! From a heritage standpoint I can tell that the Japanese have many traditions that are very simple and yet complex - I will have to take and post pics of my mothers baskets made with oragami or her bottle holders she crochets from strands of plastic grocery bags (this one really surprised me!) and I keep saying I'll make time to post the info on Koh - the art of Japanese incense.
This is a wonderful thread - thank you!

I saw some on the website that look like they could be used for scrying too... I'll definitely try this when I can, plus- is it just me or does this remind anyone of meditation? the whole process of making a 'perfect', shiny circle out of mud, the patience youd need do do it ect?

Everything that I have ever learned from my mother of my Japanese heritage is that much meditation is used in all things from the simplest of tea ceremonies to enjoying incense,,,,that from simplicity is great complexities and the meditation is the understanding of this process.... Greetings all! Well I'm finally getting around to uploading a picture if the one I made. Made it a couple of months ago back in Florida, took me a few tries to get one that didn't end up crumbling away. And even with this one the shiny outsideis layer flaked off. Regardless if that I'm keeping it until I feel like trying again, besides it's still rather pretty. Blessed Be, Myrenateli

Oh wow, that's incredible! I never would have thunk it, lol. This will be PERFECT for what I was looking for, something to collect from each duty station we move to (hubby's in the military). I can make one from the soil of each state/country we get stationed to. ) Thank you so much for posting this!

The Dorodango was mentioned in Christopher Paolini's book Inheritance, the fourth Eragon book. It was under a different name, but I recognized it from this thread and was amused. Just thought I would add that here.

Bell, lol, that's what my husband told me after I told him I wanted to make "a shiny mud ball."

I was wondering, do you think it would work if you used incense ash instead of dirt? I was thinking something along the lines of a purification ball, seeing as ash has that whole purification association going on.

Just dirt im afraid, but you can use red colored dirt, depending on where you live, and make them in different colors.
