Merry Meet Book Clubers!
This will be the thread for us to discuss our first book, Aradia, Gospel of the Witches by Charles Leland.
Feel free to begin posting about what you have read anytime. You don't have to wait until you have read the entire book to post your thoughts. In about a month we will have a real-time discussion for this as well; either with Skype or some kind of messenger if Magicka chat is not up and running yet.
I am very excited for this to begin. Happy reading!

I'm reading the beginning of the third chapter and it says, "Diana was the first created before all creation;..." I am wondering if Diana was the first created who created her? How was she created? To have been created means there is a creator.
This might not be a major point but I was just curious and thought I would post it. What are your thoughts?

I started it but I want to start over with a notebook to take notes. It mentions she had a brother, who created him?

I did a little supplemental research and it seems that in this folklore Diana is made out to be the creatrix/creator of all, so I don't think that there's going to be much on who created the chicken who created the first eggs, if you will. I also read that Diana, being said creatrix, gave birth to her "brother" Lucifer (sounds funny, don't it? ) and then created Aradia with him so Diana could send her to earth and teach the "oppressed" (former serfs and stuff) witchcraft to eradicate the "oppressing race" of ruling lords and such. I just got done with chapter one, which is pretty short when you skip all the Italian. It'll be interesting to read into chapter three when it explains more of Diana's creatorship and supposedly splits herself into darkness and light or something like that.

I finished chapter 3 and it was fun to read where traditions come from. I liked that Diana turned into a cat. I'll never look at a Black Cat the same. I also liked how the book talked about meeting in clearings. It's nice to see some traditions stay alive.

I just got through chapter two and I'm totally irked by the threats when people ask Diana and Aradia for favors. Threatening anyone when they aren't granted a favor just seems wrong to me.
Is it just me or does Lucifer sound like the Lucifer from the Bible? I know the Magicka class says he's not, but this book says he fell from heaven and was "most evil of all spirits".

It's like the chicken and the egg thing, who came first In Greek mythology, the universe began with Chaos, like a big mass of energy where everything came from. Would Diana have come from something like Chaos, where she was formed from a mass of energy?

Forgive me for intruding..........It's sooo long ago since I read this book and I'm not sure I read it in this book or another but I seem to remember that, somewhere, I read that Diana was created by the beings who were beings before Time began.

Briganta It mentioned that she went to the father and mother spirits when she wanted to swallow up the light. They helped or turned her into a cat and that was how she was able to bed Lucifer and conceive their child. But I don't think it mentions how the humans were created.

I have to say that I'm finding the book really interesting, though sometimes it can be a bit hard going lol!

I will check my sources again.

I also do find it hard to follow in some areas. I find that I have to look up some words because I do not know what they mean.Chapter 1 Quote: Nor like the race who have become at last Wicked and infamous from suffering, As are the Jews and wandering Zingari, I find this interesting. Zingari is another name for gypsies. I thought that was cool.
Chapter 4 Quote: To find a stone with a hole in it is a special sign of the favour of Diana. Would this be like a hag stone??
I had to re-read chapter 3 because when I read it at first I was knackered. So, after re-reading it I saw this:Quote: Then Diana went to the fathers of the Beginning, to the mothers, the spirits who were before the first spirit, So, I guessed that really answered my question.
