*These have proven toxic to animals, so I include them as a caution, although I am not sure of their toxicity to humans. I would suggest further research before including them in your cuisine!

I was prescribed Belladonna for severe stomach cramps because I am highly allergic to Reglan. The warnings on the Belladonna were long. You can only take it in small quantities for short periods of time.

I know they also prescribe a form of Foxglove to some heart patients but there again the warnings are many on how and when to take it.

i guess i have never met anyone who hasnt eaten a tomato or a potato or a eggplant. these are fine to eat. but if you have rheumatoid arthritis stay away from the tomato it makes your blood acid rise and causes further pain. another hint for those sufferers water is your best friend it will ease your pain.

Other toxic herbs:
Aminita Muscaria (Fly Agaric), Datura, Henbane, Mandrake, San Pedro, Wolfsbane.

Wormwood CAN be toxic. It should be used only for short periods of times and it is NOT for children.

Heck, even almonds can be toxic if you get to many.

To be safe, one should always research their herbs prior to use.

I have seen and eaten sugared daffodils several times and found them quite pleasing. Are you sure they're toxic?

Ok. From what I have been hearing, some people eat the flowers of daffodils, and I looked around to find what I could. The leaves and roots contain poisonous crystals which can only be consumed by some insects. So I guess that means the flowers are safe, as nothing was said about them. Yet everything else I'm finding online is saying that the flowers ARE toxic. If anyone knows more on this, please add.

eggplant, tomato, and white potato , the toxic part are the green plants not the fruit as for foxglove that is the origin of the drug Digitoxin used to regulate and strengthen the heartbeat of patients most commonly those with congestive heart failure, bundle branch blocks and post myocardial infarction(this for a short term) it's been used for a very long time ,first the foxglove itself then digitoxin now dixoxin/lanoxin but growing it in the garden such beautiful flowers in several pastel colours, and perennial most critters seem to know to stay away as I have dogs and a cat, never touched it, skunks, squirrels various birds, chipmunks, raccoons and deer all left it alone just want to watch the little kiddies who might pick the flowers and stick them in teir mouths, they smell good, don't know how the taste but way,way back when, it was an effective poison as it could slow the heart to nothing It would't take much to harm a child

The roots and fruits of the 'staples' (like potato) are staples these days, but for many years in the UK, potatoes weren't eaten because it was well known that over-ripe potatoes can be fatal, and its greens / flowers can be poisonous too.

There are many foods that we now eat, even though other parts of it are significantly poisonous. So while for example, potatoes are a staple part of many family's diet, they can be poisonous if gathered too late / or if other parts of the plant aside from the starchy root are consumed.

Some of the plants listed here have parts that can be used, and parts that cannot - that is true of many plants. Even Dyll listing Amanita muscaria as a toxin isn't strictly true, because in small quantities it is an entheogen with few negative side effects, just as marijuana isn't a 'toxin' per se, but if used to excess can have negative side effects on our health.

Exercise wisdom and patience when using herbs, treat them with the respect that you hope to be treated with in return! And if you're ever uncertain, contact a qualified individual like a herbalist or naturopath with a herbalism degree.

You forgot about MoonFlower. We had a huge bush growing by our kitchen window and my mother got seriously ill after tending the garden and forgetting to wash her hands before making a quick snack to eat, just touching the plant and then her food was enough to get ill. No need to eat the plant, unless you want to end up in hospital.
